Our Story

The story of an old boy named Rusty and why we’re here today.

Hi! I’m Rusty!

Hi there, I’m Rusty, a chill 16-year-old mutt who’s lived a life full of adventure, road trips, scritches and tons of love, with my human, Chris.

My story began in a pound in Montreal. After a few months of nobody picking me, I was transferred to Toronto in hopes of finding a home. It was a pretty rough time—months passed without knowing what would happen next. But everything changed when I was about 10 months old and Chris walked into the pound looking to meet me because a friend of his shared my photo – thanks, Diego!

We took a walk, decided we liked each other right away, and he decided to take me home. (Although, he first had to put me back in my kennel to fetch a collar and leash, which was terrifying—I thought he might not come back. But he did!) I still wear that same collar today; truthfully, I get nervous when it’s off! I think I might have been named Jack before Chris found me, but that doesn’t really matter anymore.

Since that day, I’ve had countless adventures with my best friend. Together, we’ve logged over 90,000 kilometers, including epic drives across Canada, flights to Costa Rica, and time spent living in a little surf town called Nosara. Now we’re enjoying life in British Columbia, where I’m spending my golden years.

My paws have explored the sands of beautiful beaches, climbed mountains where I felt like the king of the world, braved mosquitoes portaging in Algonquin Park, sailed around islands in Georgian Bay with my buddies, and relaxed by countless campfires. British Columbia is definitely my favorite, though—with its mountains, giant trees, beaches, and hot springs. Speaking of hot springs, Sloquet Hot Springs tops my list (that’s where I wear my red rain suit, pictured below). But let’s keep that place just between us!

Chris is my absolute best friend—even when the vet makes me nervous, if Chris says it’s okay, I trust him completely. He cooks delicious homemade meals, provides the best nutrition, and ensures I have supplements to keep me feeling healthy and energetic. I’ve had some tough arthritis days lately, but thanks to Chris’s care, I’ve managed to bounce back. Even at 16, I still do almost everything I did a decade ago!

Everywhere we go, I make new friends—people, pooches, even the occasional seal! I cherish every friend I’ve made, but none more than Chris. Our bond is something truly special.

Our story is one of friendship, loyalty, and a commitment to living the healthiest, happiest life possible. That’s exactly why we started Healthy Hounds—to help you provide your furry friend with an amazing life, just like mine.

Our web shop is coming soon, but in the meantime, make sure to check out our Resources page. You’ll find valuable insights to help keep your dog happy, healthy, and thriving.

Healthy Hounds was inspired by my best buddy and adventure partner for the last 16 years, Rusty. Together, we’ve logged over 90,000 kilometers – from driving across Canada, tons of camping/sailing trips, and flights between Toronto, Vancouver and Costa Rica. Through it all, I’ve seen just how much proper care and a whole lot of love can do to keep a dog feeling great — even in their golden years.

With a background in sustainability and a career building mission-driven businesses, I wanted to create something different: a resource and product hub focused on helping dogs like Rusty live longer, healthier, happier lives.

Healthy Hounds is about real info, real products, and real care. Backed by experts, grounded in love, and built for people who want to do right by their dogs without being overwhelmed. I’m glad you’re here.

Jeanette Johnstone

I’ve been a veterinary technician for over 20 years, working across small animal medicine, dog behavior, and wellness care. My journey has taken me from busy clinics in Canada to rescue missions in Costa Rica and Thailand—yes, it was just as rewarding (and chaotic) as you’d imagine.

In 2016, I co-founded a rescue organization in Nosara, Costa Rica, and since returning home to Canada, I’ve focused my energy on pet owner education. Through health coaching, webinars, online courses, and product vetting (yes, pun intended), I help pet parents make smarter, more holistic choices for their dogs.

These days, I run my own practice offering behavioral consulting, canine bodywork, and rehab support—always tailored to your dog’s unique needs. At Healthy Hounds, I’m here to make sure the advice and products we share actually work for your real life—and your real dog.
